Publication competence in English is important for the activities of a young researcher and his/her further scientific and professional growth. In the article, in the context of the current state of the teaching methodology of the discipline "Academic Writing" (AW), taking into account the experience of the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics of Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology, the main difficulties of mastering competencies in the conditions of traditional language training of students at a technical higher school are considered, and the experience of end–to-end teaching of AP based on several stages - from undergraduate to postgraduate studies. The main teaching sources and techniques for working with a research paper in English are described. It is concluded that a systematic step-by-step approach is necessary for the organization of academic writing training for publication purposes.
