TO THE PROBLEM OF STUDYING PROFESSIONAL TERMINOLOGY BY THE STUDENTS OF NON-LINGUISTIC DEPARTMENTS

The article deals with the peculiarities of studying special terminology by the students of non-linguistic departments. The purpose of the current research is to evaluate the level of professional terminology acquisition by the second-year students of the department “Nanotechnologies and microsystem engineering » at the Ivanovo State University. The material included the students’ written papers, in which they were given various tasks, concerning their knowledge of nanotechnological terminology. Results showed that the study of special terminology in the situation of artificial bilingualism presents considerable difficulties among students. This is linked with poor linguistic knowledge as well as with certain peculiar features of the given area: polysemy, homonymy and synonymy of terminological units of the sphere of nanotechnology and related sciences are observed. In conclusion the reasons for the above-mentioned difficulties and some ways of their overcoming are pointed out.
