The paper presents the description of modern online English dictionaries from the point of view of their use in the educational process. Special attention is given to monolingual explanatory dictionaries which have an explicit educational focus due to intensive development of new information technologies and changes in the user’s profile. The orientation of dictionaries to the user causes a change in the functionality of such reference books, since their educational, reference and systematizing nature is enhanced. The author has analyzed and described the ways of presenting grammatical and lexical reference material at the level of mega- and macrostructure of such lexicographic resources. The main methods used in dictionaries for the formation of lexical and grammatical skills have been considered.
